Looking through the window

ARTIST STATEMENT
As the number of people infected with coronavirus in Japan increased, my girlfriend went to work as usual.
Many people were in the same situation as my girlfriend, continuing to go to work.
Even after the government issued an emergency declaration, people went to work at 70 – 80 per cent of companies.
The crisis was not yet real for our society.
At that time, I didn’t have a job. In an effort to protect my girlfriend from infection, I stayed inside all the time.
So, I opened my computer and watched the live camera stream of the huge intersection in Shibuya. It showed the current world that cannot be seen from the windows at home.
It showed that the congestion level had decreased by about 60 per cent, but nonetheless, people heading to work constantly moved around the screen.
They are those who are risking exposure.
Even in the face of a life-threatening pandemic, society is unable to stop its activities in order to avoid an economic crisis. Eventually, the company my girlfriend worked for decided to have the employees work remotely, because some of its workers started to show symptoms of the coronavirus.
Today, many people are crossing intersections on the screen that lacks reality.
But it is reality.
コロナウイルス感染者が日本で増え続ける間も私の彼女はいつも通り出勤した。
彼女だけでなく、多くの人が感染者が出始めてもいつもと変わらない状態にあった。
そして政府が緊急事態宣言を出した後も7-8割の企業においてそれは変わる事はなかった。
私たちはこの危機に対してどこか現実感に欠けていた。
その頃、私は写真家としての仕事が無くなったのでずっと家にいた。
不安な日々の中で、私にできる事は家にいて、自分が感染して彼女に感染させてしまわないようにする事だけであった。
だからパソコンを開いて渋谷の巨大な交差点を映すライブカメラの映像を眺めていた。
そこには家の窓からでは見る事のできない世の中の現在が映しだされていた。
混雑具合は6割ほど少なくなったそうだが、それでもなお仕事に向かう人が絶え間なく画面を移動していく。
彼らは危険に晒されることを強要された、もしくは危険を受け入れざるを得なかった人だ。
命の危機に直面したとしても、社会は経済的な危機を免れる為にその活動を止める事ができないでいる。
例え個人個人がウイルスに感染したくないと思っているのだとしても、自分以外の何かを守らなければならなかった。
結局、社内で感染の兆候を示すスタッフが出始めた事から彼女の会社は社員にリモートワークを進める事を決断した。
現実感に欠いた画面の中を今日も多くの人が行き交っている。
しかしこれは現実である。
