A DIFFERENT KIND OF CHALLENGE

The social media trend “#challengeaccepted” began in Turkey in honor of the victims of femicide, which totaled almost 500 in 2019. The black and white photos women shared on their Instagram pages served as a reminder and action of solidarity with the women killed, as their photos appear in black and white in the newspapers.
The terrible cases of violence against women and impunity of the aggressors in Turkey feel sadly similar to the reality lived in Peru, my home country. Since the beginning of the quarantine, more than 900 women and girls have disappeared. It is feared that hundreds of them are no longer alive.
This challenge can be a moment to show the stories of women who did not have the opportunity to be nominated by their friends, sisters, mothers. Women whose lives were taken unfairly by men who believe they have a special right: to dispose of women's bodies and lives. Women whose stories have been summarized into brief news reports describing their deaths, without mentioning any humanizing details about their lives.
I encourage those nominated for this challenge to inform themselves about what is happening in their country in relation to violence against women, to read about the victims and their stories, and to demand justice for victims of femicide.
El challenge en redes sociales “#challengeaccepted” se originó en Turquía en honor a las víctimas de feminicidio, que sumaron casi 500 en el 2019. Las fotos en blanco y negro que mujeres han compartido en Instagram representaban una acción de solidaridad con las víctimas, ya que sus fotos aparecían en los medios con un filtro blanco y negro.
Los terribles casos de violencia contra la mujer e impunidad de los agresores en Turquía se sienten tristemente similares a la realidad que vivimos en el Perú. Desde el inicio de la cuarentena se han registrado más de 900 mujeres y niñas desaparecidas en nuestro país. Se teme que cientos de ellas ya no están vivas.
Este challenge puede ser la ocasión para mostrar las historias de mujeres que no tuvieron la oportunidad de ser nominadas por sus amigas, hermanas, madres. Mujeres cuyas vidas fueron tomadas injustamente por hombres que creen tener un derecho especial: disponer de las cuerpos y vidas de las mujeres. Sus historias han sido resumidas a breves notas de prensa que describen sus muertes, sin dar ningún detalle sobre sus vidas.
Animo a todas las nominadas a este challenge a informarse sobre lo que está sucediendo en su país en relación a la violencia contra las mujeres, a leer sobre las víctimas y sus historias, y a exigir justicia para las víctimas de feminicidio.
Lizmar Hernández Farías
Lizmar migrated to Lima from Venezuela in search of better opportunities. Posts on her Instagram account show how she was adapting to her new life, enjoying the beaches and Peruvian food.
Eight months after her arrival, her body was found far from the city with a gunshot wound. Her employer, Rafael Villegas Peña, 73, confessed to the crime and received only 9 months of preventive detention. He is believed to have covered up the real killer: his son, who was constantly harassing Lizmar.
Lizmar spent the last Christmas of her life away from her family. Days before her death, her father wrote on Lizmar's Facebook: “My daughter, I’m looking forward to your return to your country. We will never forget you. You are and will be the best daughter we have ever had. Your mother and I are proud of you. My precious Diamond”

Lizmar migró a Lima desde Venezuela en busca de mejores oportunidades de trabajo.En Instagram, Lizmar publicaba fotos disfrutando de las playas y la comida peruana, adaptándose a su nueva vida.
Ocho meses después de su llegada, su cuerpo fue hallado lejos de la ciudad, con un impacto de bala. Su empleador, Rafael Villegas Peña de 73 años, confesó el crimen y recibió solo 9 meses de prisión preventiva. Se cree que encubrió al verdadero asesino: su hijo, quien acosaba constantemente a Lizmar.
Ella pasó la última navidad de su vida lejos de su familia. Días antes de su muerte, su padre escribió en el Facebook de Lizmar: “Hija, te espero con ansias que vuelvas a tu país. nunca te olvidaremos. Eres y serás la mejor hija que hemos tenido. Tu madre y yo estamos orgullosos de ti. Mi precioso Diamante”
Vanessa Romero Pérez
Vanessa was a young mother described by her family as "a woman who had plans ahead and who adored her youngest daughter." On her Facebook page she posted selfies with her 10-year-old daughter and posts with inspirational messages:
Patience feeds tolerance, tolerance feeds love, love feeds forgiveness and forgiveness feeds peace.
Her daughter's father, Lee Mermao Chirinos, killed Vanessa after she refused to continue the relationship. Vanessa's mother found out about the murder when she arrived at the morgue, where she recounted, heartbroken:
I spoke to my daughter on the phone and she said to me: 'Mom, I’ll pick up my daughter tonight';That was the last time I spoke to her. I do not understand what has happened

Vanessa Romero Pérez era una joven madre descrita por su familia como “una mujer que tenía planes por delante y que adoraba a su menor hija”. En su Facebook publicaba selfies con su hijita de 10 años y posts con mensajes inspiracionales:
“La paciencia es el alimento de la tolerancia, la tolerancia es el alimento del amor, el amor es el alimento del perdón y el perdón es el alimento de la paz”.
El padre de su hija, Lee Mermao Chirinos, la mató luego de que ella se negara a continuar con la relación sentimental. La madre de Vanessa se enteró del asesinato al llegar a la morgue, donde contó, desconsolada:
“Hablé con mi hija por teléfono y me dijo: ‘Mamá, en la noche paso por mi hija’; esa fue la última vez que hablé con ella. No entiendo esto que ha sucedido”
Lucero del Pilar Camacho More
Lucero was a young mother of two children, of 4 and 6 years of age. In her Facebook posts she appears as a confident woman, proud of her children and with plans for the future. Along with this image she wrote:
“The only person responsible for everything you undertake is you, only you! Everything you do is with your attitude and sacrifice. You decide whether to stay where you are or make things happen. Let's go to the next level <3 completely blessed!”
She was beaten to death in her own home. The main suspect, her partner Jaime Herrera Castillo was captured by the police but was soon released for lack of evidence. No one has been arrested for the crime.

Lucero era una joven madre de dos niños de 4 y 6 años. En sus publicaciones de Facebook aparece como una mujer feliz, orgullosa de sus hijos y con mucha confianza en sí misma. Junto a esta imagen escribió:
“La única responsable de todo aquello que emprendes eres tú, únicamente tú! Todo lo que haces que suceda es tu actitud y sacrificio. Tú decides si quedarte donde estás o haces que las cosas sucedan. Vamos a un siguiente nivel <3 completamente bendecida!”
Fue asesinada a golpes en propio hogar. El principal sospechoso, su pareja Jaime Herrera Castillo, fue capturado por la policía, pero fue liberado por falta de evidencia. Nadie ha sido arrestado por el crimen.
